Schoolism - Digital Painting with Craig Mullins: Week 1 + 2

Week 1 of this course focuses on seperating light from shadow, focussing on their shapes.
Portraits done in PS, Skull in Procreate using an iPad Pro.

In week 2 Craig shows two seperate approaches of starting a painting.
1. Starting out with 3 values using hard edges to get the main shapes right and taking it from there,
2. Slowly building up a painting, starting out with low contrast/soft edges and going from there.

The first method is a lot quicker, while the second method offers a little more control. Combining these two methods would be ideal. Progress shots can be found on the left while the final works are shown on the right.

Schoolism - Digital Painting with Bobby Chiu: Week 1 + 2 recap (Photostudy)

Week 2 for this course required the student to apply colour to a painting using the color layer blending mode in Photoshop. I decided to do a photostudy using Bobby's method of painting during last week as a recap for week 1 and 2 of this course. So playing with flow and opacity settings of the brush - and using a color layer!

Reference pic used came from a group of reference photo's for artists that's been on the internet for quite a while. (she's very orange on the actual picture as well)

Schoolism - Digital Painting with Bobby Chiu - Week #01

Worked on my second Schoolism course during last week. The goal of the assignment is to get you to understand how the lecturer (Bobby) thinks when he's painting digitally. For this you are provided a drawing which you are then supposed to paint over while following along with Bobby's lecture, and eventually finalize in your own time.

< The sketch you're provided with. (NOT MADE BY ME)

My final painting.

As is visible in this painting process there's a lot of emphasize on how you structure your paintings. Starting out with the dark silhouette and adding in lights first, shadows second, etc. etc. until you get to a point where detail becomes more important and your attention has to shift to whatever you feel  demands it most at the time.

Schoolism - Drawing Fundamentals with Thomas Fluharty - Week #04

Composition was the subject for this week, and also for the last 'homework' assingment.
You are provided a reference sheet and supposed to include some, or all of these images into a single composition.

I started out doing some thumbnails (something that is also adviced in the video tutorials)

- and decided to bring the top left thumbnail to a more finished state. (not too finished, as I was a little pre-occupied this week.)

And with this all the assignments for this Schoolism course are finished. The course offers a nice overview of all the basic fundamentals; perspective, value, composition and shape. I think the course could have gone a little more in-depth with this however, but as it's clearly aimed at complete beginners it's understandable the lecturer wanted to keep it brief. The same can be said for the homework assignments, which apart from the last week all focused on copying an image, not so much on actually applying one of the aforementioned fundamentals (e.g. the perspective assignment). Anyways, on to the next!

Schoolism - Drawing Fundamentals with Thomas Fluharty - Week #03

This weeks subject was Perspective. Fairly simple assignment and not very heavy on actually studying perspective. Once again the assignment was to study an image provided by the lecturer while also keeping last weeks subjects (shape and value resp.) in mind.
